BREAKING PARADIGMS
Breaking Paradigms
Milagro Azofeifa C.
The way we behave, we react, we think, we face situations in life depends on the way we see the World.
Our background, what we have been taught in our families, society, country, makes us perceive the world the way we see it.
These paradigms we live by are very strong and make us see a subjective reality. What I believe is the truth is not necessarily true for somebody else, but it is what we are conditioned to see.
In order to change paradigms, break with traditions, and old ways of thinking, we have to listen to others and be open to their perceptions. For this, we have to be calm, respectful, assertive, so that we can see the others´ point of view. Most times, it is not easy, especially when we strongly believe in something.
The first step must be to be conscious of the point of view of other people so that we can be able to respect and even accept what they believe in.
There is a proverb that says that “Minds are like parachutes. They only function when open.” Only when we are open minded, it is that we can accept paradigms shifts.
We as teachers have the great responsibility to not only try to understand and respect our students paradigms, but also guide them to respect and accept others point of view.
In my own experience, not only as a teacher, I used to have strong feelings against Nicaraguans, but I experienced a shift in thinking. I have the opportunity to work in a project to improve the English of teachers from El Salvador , Honduras , Nicaragua , and Costa Rica . We have had meetings in León , Nicaragua , and it was there that I had the chance to meet and become friend of some Nicaraguans. Now my point of view is different. I see them in a different way, in a positive way.
Sometimes it takes a short time, sometimes it takes years, but if we listen to others, learn about their points of view, respect their paradigms, then, we are able to change our perceptions or at least understand other people´s perceptions and change the way we see the world.
